History of the ARNOLD-ZWEIR POST 22, American Legion (RI)
In September 1919, Congress chartered the national American Legion as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness and "to cement the ties and comradeship born of service." Ten years later, in 1929, Jamestown's American Legion Post 22 was formed, the twenty-second post in the state.
In 1946 the members of Post 22 expanded the post name to honor two men born and educated in Jamestown who had been killed in action during the recently ended World War II.

Pfc Howard Arnold was born in May 1917 and arrived in France with Company C of the 104th Regiment near the Belgium border in September 1944. He was killed in action a month later on October 8, 1944. He is buried in Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France. Pvt Francis X. Zweir was born in February 1922 and joined the army when he was 20. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Zweir landed at Utah Beach with Company L of the 358th Infantry Regiment. He was killed in action six months later on January 15, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in the American Military Cemetery and Memorial, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. |
